Stryker Lane took first place in both the discus and the shotput events at the track and field state championship on Grand Junction this weekend.
Lane threw for a personal best in both events, hurling the discus 161 feet, nine inches and the shot 52 feet, six inches.
“They’re both school records,” said Coach Sheri Carr. “He threw outstanding this weekend. I knew it was coming because he was so confident. He just did a great job.”
Lane is also a state champion wrestler.
Lane’s younger sister, Mollie, managed to take second place in the discus event with a throw of 122 feet. She didn’t fare as well with the shotput, throwing 30 feet, 11 inches. That throw was short of her usual distances and she did not advance to the final round.
“She didn’t throw to her potential,” said Carr.
Gabe Torres competed in the mile run, but was outpaced by the competition. He finished in five minutes, five seconds.
“He stuck with everybody for the first two laps, but there were some real strong mile runners,” said Coach Jack Brier. “It was great for a freshman to get out there and see what the competition’s like. He’ll do it. He’s got the tools to do it.”
Billy Fourney also competed in the state championship in the 300-meter hurdles, but did not advance.
“It was a learning experience,” said Brier. “I am proud of the kids for getting there and working hard all year. It was a good experience, and the good thing about it is they get to come back next year. I have high hopes for next year.”
