Norwood, Colo. -

Norwood High School’s track and field team is on the home stretch of their season, as they head to the regional competition in Grand Junction this weekend.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Bayfield to compete in a multi-league meet. Runners and field competitors were ranked according to how they fared within their own league, but they also got a chance to compete against some of the athletes from bigger schools.
“The best competed against the best,” said Coach Sheri Carr.
For Stryker Lane, there was no competition. Even against the larger schools, Lane managed to take a first place not just in his league but overall in both the discus and the shotput. Lane threw the discus a whopping 157 feet, and the shot 48 feet, four and a half inches. Lane has already pre-qualified for the state competition.
Lane’s sister Mollie also fared well in Bayfield. She came in first in the league for discus, with a 116 foot, 11 inch throw. She came in second in the league for shotput, with a throw of 33 feet, nine inches. Mollie Lane has already pre-qualified for state competition in the discus event.
Sandy Royer came in second place in the league for the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 20.1 seconds. She also came in second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 55.55 seconds. Royer threw the disc 84 feet, two inches, and the shotput 27 feet, two and a half inches.
Billy Fourney came in second place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17 seconds flat. He placed first, however, in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.93 seconds. Fourney also placed in the 100-meter dash, coming in third with a time of 12.19 seconds.
Gabe Torres ran the 1600-meter event, roughly a mile, in just five minutes, two seconds for a second-place finish. He came in third in the 3200 meters, with a time of 11 minutes, 12 seconds.
Ethan Alexander took sixth place in the 400 meters, with a time of 58 seconds. He came in seventh in the 200 meters, with a time of 25.6 seconds. He also came in fourth in the shotput, with a throw of 36 feet, four and three-quarter inches, and seventh in the discus, with a 93-foot throw.
Brennan Carr came in sixth place in the disc, with a throw of 97 feet, two inches, and third place in the shotput, with a throw of 37 feet, seven and a half inches.
This week, the athletes will travel to Grand Junction for the regional competition on Friday and Saturday. The top three competitors in each event, along with anyone who pre-qualified earlier in the season, will earn the chance to compete in the state competition.
“They worked hard and did well, but now we’re thinking about regionals,” said Coach Jack Brier. “That’s the last one for the kids to make a shot at state.”
